Five speed fixes that actually matter

Speed is not a score you chase once. It is the result of a few decisions made early and defended afterwards.

1. Stop shipping full-size photographs

The most common cause of a slow Indian business site is a 4,000-pixel photograph displayed at 400 pixels. Resize to the rendered size, convert to WebP, compress, and set explicit width and height so the layout does not jump.

2. Load only what is on screen

Lazy-load images below the fold. Remove carousels that load ten slides nobody sees. Do not preload every font weight; most sites need two files, not eight.

3. Cut the scripts you do not use

Every chat widget, heatmap, popup and tracking tag is a request that can block the page. Keep the ones that earn their cost. If a tag has not been looked at in a year, remove it.

4. Make the first screen fast

  • Preload the hero image and the one font used above the fold.
  • Inline the small amount of critical CSS, defer the rest.
  • Do not hide the whole page behind a preloader that depends on JavaScript.

5. Test on a phone, on a slow connection

Office Wi-Fi flatters every site. Throttle to a mid-range Android on 4G, then watch the largest contentful paint and the layout shift. If the headline moves after the image loads, fix the dimensions.

What to ignore

A perfect Lighthouse score is not the goal. A page that shows the offer quickly and lets someone call you is. Chasing two extra points by removing useful content is a bad trade.
