Google Business Profile: the local lever most businesses ignore

For a business with a physical address, the Google Business Profile is often the highest-intent surface you own. It is also the one most businesses set up once and never touch again.

Start with the category

The primary category decides which searches you can appear for. Choose the most specific one that describes the main work, then add secondary categories only where you genuinely deliver that service. A printer that adds “graphic designer” to reach more searches usually just confuses the listing.

Complete the profile like a landing page

  • Services: list them with a short description and a starting price where you can. Empty service lists lose to complete ones.
  • Photos: real photographs of the shop, the team, the work and the street. Ten honest photos beat fifty stock images.
  • Hours: including festival closures. Wrong hours produce one-star reviews faster than bad work.
  • Attributes: parking, accessibility, payment methods — only where true.
  • Q&A: seed the questions customers actually ask, then answer them yourself. It is allowed and it helps.

Reviews are a process, not a campaign

Ask at the moment the work is handed over, in person, with a short link. Reply to every review within two working days — including the bad ones. A calm, specific reply to a complaint is read by every future customer.

Never buy reviews, swap them, or ask staff to write them. It is against Google’s rules and it is obvious in the pattern.

Posts and photos, monthly

One post a month is enough to show the profile is alive: a recent job, a new machine, a seasonal note. Add two or three new photographs at the same time.

Consistency across the web

The same business name, address and phone number should appear on your website, the profile, your invoices and the main directories. Inconsistent suite numbers and old phone numbers split the signal.

Location pages, done properly

If you serve several areas, write one page per area that describes real work there, real travel or delivery details, and a local phone number if you have one. Do not publish twenty identical pages with the city name swapped — that is the most common local SEO mistake in India.

What to check every month

  • Are the hours and phone number still correct?
  • Did any review go unanswered?
  • Which searches brought calls, according to the profile’s own performance data?
  • Are the photos current?
